1974 Upon returning to the village, Te Anau, from many months of living in the forest as commercial deer hunter Gordon was approached by local helicopter pilot Bill Black. He suggested to Gordon to take a trial flight in a Piper Cub PA18 with the then present flight instructor Iain Scott who was a local minister. Enthusiastically Gordon, during the flight realized his new future livelihood. Upon completing the flight a conversation was held with Mr Black and Mr Scott where it was agreed Gordon was recommendable as a potential commercial pilot. Gordon then under the guidance of his older brother Jim obtained his aero plane private pilots licence. June 6 1974 Gordon achieved his first solo in a Piper Cherokee PA28. Haven been taught by flight instructor Stewart Graham at the Invercargill Aero Club. August 6 1975 Gordon was issued his private pilots licence by flight testing officer Neville Kenard. During this time Gordon was still commercial deer hunting in the forest as well as a helicopter crewman engaged in shooting deer from the helicopter for forest protection eradication. The deer recovered by these operations fulfilled an export market. May 10 1976 Gordon was approached by his brother Jim and was requested to obtain his commercial helicopters pilots licence, which would enable Gordon to become a hunter pilot. On this day he commenced training with flight instructor Larry Larribve. May 30 1977 Gordon was issued his commercial helicopter pilots licence by civil aviation flight test officer Murray Cooper in a Hughes 269C (Hughes 300). June 09 1982 Gordon was issued his commercial Aesopian pilots licence by Civil Aviation flight testing officer Graham Leach in a Cessna 172. February 02 1983 Gordon, whilst hunting with helicopter was shot down by a person hiding in the forest with a 303 caliber rifle. October 23 2009 Gordon was issued his flight instructors licence by RAANZ senior flight instructor Murray Haagen in micro light Bantam 225. At this time Gordon has total flight experience as a pilot of 5400 hours.
